SUMMARY

I was in charge of designing an escape game for the company Suez and Bordeaux Metropole. The theme being water, the goal was to make young people aware of their relationship with water. I handled project management, game design, as well as service design.

An escape game to mobilize young people

Water in developed countries may seem to be an instantly available resource in abundance. But on a global scale, it is a scarce resource. The day when water could become difficult to access for everyone could come sooner than expected. This project aimed to raise awareness among the youngest by a playful method. We wanted to stand out by proposing a solution that would combine research, learning and play. We found this solution in the form of an escape game.

RESEARCH

Rethinking escape games

The complexity of this project was based on two main constraints. The first one, the number of participants at the same time, a whole class, approximatively thirty students. The second, objective of this project was a tour of the city around Bordeaux and travel to a new destination afterwards. The entire escape game needs to be moveable. The classic escape game welcomes most of the time 7 to 8 people simultaneously in a fixed place. The intersection of these two issues led us to completely rethink the concept of the escape game.

DEFINITION

Inform, raise awareness, motivate, mobilize

The water theme is vast, but we wanted to address the issues related to water on the metropolis territory but also on a global scale.

- The consequences of climate change on water resources and populations.

- The impact of climate change on local groundwater resources.

- In the era of climate change, the impact of our practices on the water quality of rivers, including the Garonne

- Climate change mitigation in the city

The goals: inform, raise awareness, motivate and mobilize

IDEATION

Getting around the constraints

To respect the constraints, we first had the idea to separate each theme. Each subject would have its own space. It allows separating classes by groups of 6. Unfortunately, this idea was abandoned due to the itinerary cost. We changed our solution and designed a smaller escape game, satisfying all the themes. And to allow the reception of all the students, we conceived 3 identical modules coupled with an exhibition we already had on micro-pollutants in water. All the students of a class could be welcomed simultaneously.

The H2O Hero Escape Game is composed of an immersive scene representing a scientist's laboratory, printed on three walls. These walls were used as background but also as a support for the information necessary to unlock the puzzles. Riddles have to be solved on a central interactive totem used to control the game and to evaluate the progress of the players. The game is constructed as follows, 2' of explanation of the context and constitution of the teams, 20' of the game with the help of clues on the walls of the module, the team must solve 4 riddles to unlock the valve of the aquarium located on the central totem. And 8' of discussion of the key messages and behavioural changes associated with each puzzle.

Could you save the water?
